I recently had the pleasure of seeing the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club perform at the Ravinia Festival, a beautiful theater just north of Chicago. The band was inspired by The Buena Vista Social Club, a members-only club in Havana, Cuba that closed in the 1940s, as well as a band and film from the 1990s. The concert was the Chicago stop on the band’s farewell tour, and spirits among the Cuba-phile audience were especially high given that the U.S. had just raised its flag over the American Embassy in Cuba for the first time since 1961.
I spent hours building relevant content in the PowerPoint deck and too much time on the unnecessary fancy graphics and animations. But, practicing what I preach in the classroom and based on my favorite FDR quote “Be sincere; be brief; be seated.”, the presentation was concise, informative and efficient. It rapidly reached its end with a proposed call to action.
